The Bride

Katherine Shaw

1.5.1990

Katherine was born in Long Beach, California but primarily raised in a suburb of Kansas City called Overland Park, Kansas. After a brief stint in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for her final two years of high school she returned to Kansas to attend the University of Kansas. Katherine had been an avid artist since childhood; constantly painting, drawing, creating whatever she could get her hands on. Starting as a major in mathematics she soon realized design was much more suited to her skills and intended career path (which mostly consisted of the certainty that math was not it). Five years later she achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Design and started working for the KU School of Music as a graphic designer and web specialist.

As more opportunities in the web industry came her way she found her true passion of Front End Development (which ironically includes a good bit of math). After working in the field for a year she decided to return to Southern California and try her luck in the big city. With some determination and hard work she’s found a happy home at a Web Agency in Irvine. She’s also recently begun working with the Girls Who Code organization to encourage young girls to pursue programming as a hobby and potential career.

On your average day Katherine can be found enjoying Kenneth Branagh dinosaur mockumentaries, researching methods of ingesting coffee intravenously or playing the Final Fantasy series of playstation console games.

Garrett Gyssler

3.4.1985

Garrett was born in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Southern California when he was five years old. He has played and enjoyed many recreational and competitive activities while growing up, ranging from soccer, basketball, baseball, and band. He ultimately found a challenging and rewarding environment with Jazz Band as an Alto Saxophone player throughout Elementary, Middle and High School and continued to teach into college.

Since the very first computer his father brought home, Garrett has always known his future would include computers in some capacity. He built his first desktop PC at eleven years old and followed shortly after with his first website a year later. He worked for the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Technology Department when he turned 16, and immediately started a path towards a Computer Science degree upon graduating high school. While in college, he proceeded to spend far too much time on side projects (computer games, building a 4 million member anime website, snowboarding), but finally graduated college six years later and joined the professional web development world.

Today, Garrett works as the Director of Software Development at a local software company in Corona, CA. When not on the job, you can find him rock climbing on his home-made garage rock wall (build credit goes to Wayne Gyssler, thanks dad), or playing computers games on his custom gaming PC.

  • How they met

    21 Jul 2014

Katherine was planning a cross-country relocation from Kansas to Southern California. A couple weeks before she was to leave she underwent a bit of a confidence crisis, what if she wasn't attractive by California standards? What if she were a Kansas 7 and a California 2 and she was going to die alone in an apartment she'd probably paid too much for with 30 cats?

To allay her fears she decided to activate an old dating profile for OkCupid! and move the location to California pre-emptively. She wanted to do a bit of "user-testing", if you will, to see if she received the same influx of messages/inappropriate photos she had received when using the site in Kansas years before. So she sat down at the computer, re-activated the profile, changed the location to California, and immediately screwed it up by accidentally clicking on a profile and they notify them when you do that. Panicking, she immediately closed the browser attempting to convince herself that would help.

The next day Katherine opened up the site to check her inbox and was relieved to see the data showed she was still attractive by California standards. Scrolling through the messages one caught her eye that began with, "I saw you stopped by..." and she knew she couldn't be a dick and not talk to this guy, she'd clicked on his profile first. And so Katherine and Garrett started talking, as it turned out they worked in the same field and had many common interests.

Garrett was a little shocked and surprised when he discovered Katherine hadn't actually moved to California yet, and briefly wondered if he was being catfished. With Katherine's assurances that she is actually moving they keep chatting online.

    Harlow the dog riding shotgun

Katherine packs up everything she owns in her two-door ‘93 mercury cougar, and embarks on a five day drive across the country with Harlow riding shotgun.

  • 01 Aug 2014

After nearly two weeks messaging each other (and by this point the messages were more like essays) the two exchanged phone numbers and promptly disabled their online dating profiles.

  • The first date

    10 Aug 2014

Garrett, forgetting about brunches on sundays, planned the first date at an extremely busy fixed-menu restaurant. Deciding an hour wait wasn’t a good first impression, he reconsidered and suggested meeting at Lazy Dog. The date goes swell and they continue talking and strolling around the Brea mall. To this day, Katherine won’t let Garrett forget how his chosen attire of a long-sleeve button-down and shorts made her strongly consider relegating their relationship to the friend-zone. Garrett has since burned said shirt and shorts.

  • The second date

    13 Aug 2014

After an amazing Omakase Sushi dinner, Garrett suggests they grab some froyo nearby. Katherine insists they sit outside on the low steps to the parking lot. This is Garrett’s first stoop-date.

  • 16 Aug 2014

The next week, Garrett goes on a week-long backpacking hike in the Sequoia National Forest. There’s no cell reception, and he has zero means of communicating with the outside world. Will Katherine even remember him when he returns?

  • 21 Aug 2014

Katherine assumes Garrett has been eaten by a bear. She’s pleasantly surprised to learn he’s returned healthy and happy, if in desperate need of a shower. So they decide to go on some more dates.

  • 04 Nov 2014
    Katherine on the climbing wall

Garrett takes Katherine rock climbing for the first time. Katherine finds climbing up the walls far more preferable than the terrifying experience of coming back down.

  • 07 Apr 2015

Garrett and Katherine tackle a freelance web development job together, redesigning the Bryant Ranch School Website. They work together well, and start collaborating on projects big and small.

  • 26 May 2015

  • The Promised Vacation

    23 June 2016

Garrett plans a weekend in Portland to celebrate the act of vacationing. Having meant to ask Katherine to marry him for months now, Garrett decides Portland is the time to do it. Conveniently, he has the freedom to plan the whole getaway in secret. The venue is picked. A photographer is booked. A breakfast restaurant named ‘Harlow’ is found. Garrett continues his clandestine plans, adding additional events in attempts to throw her off the trail, should she get wise to the trip’s ultimate goal.

The much anticipated big day has arrived. Garrett manages to get Katherine to take a photo with him before leaving the hotel and sneakily sends it off to the photographer for reference. They hop in an uber and head to breakfast at Harlow. Katherine is surprised and in love with the restaurant, especially after learning the owner was planning to also name her dog Harlow. Great success. After their scrumptious breakfast, they head to their next destination, The International Rose Test Garden. Upon arriving, the couple wander around aimlessly (not really, Garrett stalled for a bit so the photographer could set up) and eventually end up in the Gold Medal Garden. Guiding Katherine toward the fountain in the center of the garden, they stop and admire their surroundings. Garrett drops to a knee and produces a jewelry box he had been hiding since early morning. The photographer suddenly leaps out from behind a bush and starts snapping photos as Garrett asks the love of his life to marry him. She says yes!
